We purchased "Iris" in August of 2003. She
was formerly named "Mariah" with a home port of North Carolina. She was
brought up on a trailer from Maryland to be rebuilt at Marshall Marine.
The extent of the needed repairs made it economically unfeasible for the
former owners to have her fixed, so she was donated to a local non profit
organization. When I came on the
scene she had been sitting for quite awhile. I took a look in the cabin and found
a few feet of water inside of the boat. After pumping it all out I found
every piece of wood in the boat to be totally rotten. She had a lot of
teak, but unfortunately almost none of it could be saved. There was a large
hole in the cockpit sole and everything seemed very spongy. Apparently she
must have had a rough time at a dock down south, as part of the rub rail
was torn off, much of the gel coat worn off, and pieces of the toe rail
smashed off. At least the trailer was in good shape.
Obviously, this little boat was in rough
shape. Common sense did not prevail. I paid too much money, and bought
myself a boat. "Iris" went
through a complete refit over the next few years and was launched again on
June 3,2006.
